Arist: Frame is inscribed as being by Cosway but the Antiques Roadshow spotted an 'E' in the bottom right of the background - the typical signature of Englehart. This has been confirmed as being by Engleheart by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
Private family letters, that somehow left the family and entered general circulation, were sold at auction (2006.07.11 without our knowledge) and refer to David sitting for Cosway. This was a mystery until a visit by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery discovered the Cosway at Northfield.
